Unlocked File When Did Same-sex Marriage Become Legal In The United States
So, there I was, scrolling through my old photos the other day, when I stumbled upon a pic from my cousin's wedding. Now, this wasn't your typical wedding - it was one of the first same-sex weddings in our family, and it got me thinking, "When did this all become legal in the good ol' US of A?"
Back in the Day
Let's rewind to the not-so-distant past. In the early 2000s, same-sex marriage was about as common as a snowball in July. Each state had its own rules, and most were, well, let's say unfriendly towards the idea. Some even had laws specifically banning same-sex marriage.
Then, in 1996, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was passed. This federal law defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman, and it was a big ol' roadblock for same-sex couples. But, as they say, every dark cloud has a silver lining. And in this case, that lining was a little thing called the courts.

Love Wins in the Courts
Fast forward to 2003. A case called Goodridge v. Department of Public Health was making waves in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that the state's ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. Boom! The first domino fell, and it was a big one.

Now, I'm not a legal eagle, but I've heard that this case set a precedent. That's fancy talk for saying it opened the floodgates for other states to follow suit. And follow they did. By 2014, 19 states and the District of Columbia had legalized same-sex marriage. But we weren't done yet.
And Then Came Obergefell
In 2015, the big daddy of all cases, Obergefell v. Hodges, landed in the Supreme Court's lap. This case was a doozy, with couples from four states challenging their respective bans on same-sex marriage.

On June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples by the Fourteenth Amendment. In other words, the court said, "You can't stop love, folks!" And just like that, same-sex marriage became legal in all 50 states.
So, there you have it, folks. A whirlwind tour of how same-sex marriage became legal in the United States. It's been a long road, filled with ups and downs, but hey, love always finds a way, right?
